Unexpected train journeys

Nasty one yesterday. . . Car share friend got a touch of Christmasitis and had to go home a lunch, leaving me to foot a grim £10.20 train fare on the way home. Wouldn’t mind but I had to stand up most of the way. The public transport in England leaves a lot to be desired!

DailySpends – Monday 22nd December

Jaffa Cakes – £0.60 (should have been £0.55 but the machine stole 5p)
Train fare – £10.20
Total = £10.60

OK so it’s more like Buses, Trains & Metro . . . but nevertheless travel is an expensive part of my working week. I don’t actually mind commuting, in fact it’s a good opportunity to catch up with the daily news or a few good tunes, but the price of travel does grate immensely!

Especially When:
– Government is supposed to be encouraging the use of public transport
– The majority of the trains I use are more like sheds than commuter vehicles
– If a train, bus or tram is late . . . there’s no recompense! (the other day, my evening train went straight past the platform leaving me stranded. No explanation, no apology, no nothing!)

Breakdown of Daily Transport Costs:
Bus – £2.00
Train – £14.00
Metro – £2.90
Total – £18.90

Annual Public Transport Commute Cost: £4554.90

Estimated Costs if Travelling by Car (per year):
Finance – £1920
Fuel – £2410
Insurance – £500
Tax & MOT – £100
Repairs etc – £400
Total – £5530

Now I’m starting to think that extra grand on top of my current expenses might be worth it just for the convenience. What do you think?
